Microsoft have announced that they are moving ION, their decentralized identity tool to Bitcoin Mainnet for a public beta test.
ION is a decentralized tool or network built by Microsoft but is to operate independently of Microsoft. It does not need or have it’s own Validator nodes or consensus mechanism, it instead relies solely on the Bitcoin blockchain network to verify transactions.
Decentralized Identity Tool
Decentralized identity tools are networks that allow or enable one to claim ownership over one’s digital identity credentials by creating unique identifiers on the network that are verifiable on the blockchain. Through the public key infrastructure, users are able to secure their own information and verify the identities of others, this will help limit reliance on big technology companies like Facebook and Google.
The ION is developed by Microsoft and the Decentralized Identity Foundation (DIF), this is an industry consortium aimed at creating technical standards for decentralized identity systems.
In a previous article by Coin desk, it was reported that on IONs beta test, Microsoft would have other great cryptocurrency firms run nodes and return feedback, some of them listed out were : Gemini, Bitpay, bitcoin startup Casa etc
The blockchain technology is still in its infancy and soon enough we will have other larger organizations see the need for the adoption of the tech.
